Infectious Teeth and Your Health
What are Infected Teeth?
An infected tooth, also known as an abscess, is an oral infection commonly located at the root or base of a tooth. Infectious teeth are often accompanied by severe toothache, and are typically the direct result of a tooth decay. Other common symptoms of infected teeth include:
- Swollen, painful gums
- Chewing pain
- Fever
- Swollen glands
- Bad taste in the mouth or bad breath
- Open sores
An abscessed tooth is usually extremely sensitive to hot and cold, and as the pressure spreads the pain grows. It is extremely important to remember that tooth infectious should NOT be taken lightly, as they can have a direct impact on your overall health. Because your issue is located in an area that will spread issues elsewhere, infectious teeth can cause other serious health issues or even aggravate pre-existing conditions. Here are a few additional problems that often occur as a direct result of an abscess:
- a condition known as Bacterial Endocarditis can result if the bacteria from the infected tooth spreads directly to the heart
- infected teeth can cause sinus infections
- damaged teeth can fall out, leaving unsightly gaps
- the infection can travel to the brain via blood vessels, causing what is known as a brain abscess, a condition that can lead to coma
- Ludwig’s Angina is an infection in the jaw or face sometimes resulting from an infected tooth
